In 1932, President Wilson’s daughter Margaret discovered Sri Aurobindo’s  Essays on the Gita while browsing through the New York Public Library.

Having heard of Sri Aurobindo's writings and the manner in which Margaret Woodrow Wilson had found an anchor in them in the course of her spiritual strivings,

Eleanor Montgomery came to India and met the Mother of the Ashram at Pondicherry ( circa 1950 ).

Back in the US Mrs. Montgomery formed a study group in New York City that met on a regular basis from 1955 to 1963.

Joe Spanier came to know Sri Aurobindo attending Mrs. Montgomery Study group and started a study group around 1963 .

When Udar Pinto came in the Fall of '72 he motivated Eleanor Montgomery to create a public center.
